This project came to life in the most analogue way imaginable.
Using only what was already there*, what nature provided, and a few basic tools, it has become one of my favourite works – because it embodies almost every value I hold as a designer adding something new to this beautiful planet.

In early 2022 I arrived at this place intending to stay for a few weeks on a workation surrounded by nature. I stayed for more than two months.

The eucalyptus-covered hillside shown here is not actually the place I arrived. It forms the natural boundary of a beautiful orchard where my host Paul welcomes guests – gently embedded in the landscape, just one kilometre from Spain’s northern coastline.
In early April the garden was still in winter rest, the hillside often wrapped in mist, so I had the privilege of watching this small piece of earth slowly awaken. In the beginning a dear friend joined me for a few weeks – and I simply stayed longer and longer. Over time other people followed, and eventually preparations began for a surf camp that finds refuge here in spring and autumn.

While this garden turned out to be the perfect environment for working on outdoor furniture projects, my only other goal was to explore and enjoy the surrounding nature – above all the ocean and its waves, the main reason I had come here in the first place. Discovering the foothills of the nearby mountains to which this slope belongs, I began to wonder why the garden did not engage with its surroundings. Beautiful in itself, it seemed to ignore the expansive view into the valley beyond. While my gaze kept returning to two trees standing close together on the hillside, right at the edge where the landscape drops hundreds of metres into the valley.

This, to me, is how the most beautiful places come to life
– in harmony with their environment.
I had not come here to build anything. Certainly not a swing.
The place itself – the time I spent there – inspired the idea.

So I asked Paul if I might cut some hazel branches and use a few planks of reclaimed wood to build a hanging platform overlooking the valley. I showed him the trees and my rough sketches – and he said yes.
More than that, he offered an old climbing rope no longer safe for mountain use. And as if it were meant to be, the organiser of the surf camp turned out to be a tree surgeon and took on the not entirely harmless task of installing the ropes almost ten metres above the roots of the trees and even higher above the steep slope.

The design draws on structural principles from vaulted construction to give the flexible hazel the stiffness required to support several people at once without making the construction to heavy. It was built using only a folding Japanese saw and a Leatherman – both always travelling with me – and Paul’s cordless drill. *We purchased only a few screws and some cord for additional fastening. Everything else was already there.

Design isn't about how it looks
it's about how it makes us feel.
This mindset lies at the heart of everything I create. Especially when designing the spaces and objects that shape our most personal environment: our homes.*
I am Jan Homann and I design everyday objects, furniture, lighting and (interior) spaces – for either brands and companys or private clients.
Growing up in northern Germany, I studied industrial design at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Kiel. My diploma in 2008 was followed by four years as inhouse designer at Tobias Grau, one of international most renowned and innovative lighting brands. This was particularly characterised by the close work with Tobias and the opportunity to take care of my projects in the field of lighting, furniture, flagship store and exhibition design from the first sketch to the implementation in detail. In 2013 I founded my own studio for design.
Now over 17 years into this wonderful profession, collaborating with various companies and fellow creatives, as well as working closely with a wide range of trades – and more recently with my own hands – has shaped me into the designer I am today.
Beyond my passion for aesthetics and the experience gathered over these years, my work as a designer has always been driven by the desire to create pieces that are as well made as possible. My ever-growing love for nature only further motivates this aspiration to make things that last.*
I would be delighted to share this expertise with you – whether in developing the next, hopefully long-lasting addition to your brand’s portfolio or by accompanying you on the journey to your dream home. j.

What touches us, matters.
What matters, we want to keep.
What we want to keep, we take care of.
Purpose forms the foundation – emotional connection gives it the chance to last beyond trends. Sustainability has always been a core principle of design – creating emotional value is the most powerful way to support it.
