basics in balance

Concrete and stainless steel – two fundamental materials of construction, not particularly known for carrying the warmth and softness desired in a private setting. Here, translated into equally fundamental geometries, they enter a quiet, almost poetic relationship that suits the intimacy of a home.
The stainless steel bowl, formed from a segment of a sphere, would simply roll away without support – beautifully perfect geometry, but impractical. To anchor it, the thin-walled vessel rests within a corresponding partial cube of concrete. The mass of the concrete keeps the bowl upright while its asymmetrical design subtly disguises this function. Each material performs where its nature is strongest: stainless steel providing lightness, precision and curvature; concrete offering weight, stability and presence. Together they transform the basic forms of sphere and cube into a single balanced object.
What usually carries buildings now aestheticly holds fruits and vegetables and for those who want to go deeper quietly reminds that balance often arises not from harmony alone, but from opposing forces working together. A delicate principle: smaller companion pieces explored in prototypes for flowers and candles could not achieve the same equilibrium and therefore never went into production.

Design isn't about how it looks
it's about how it makes us feel.

This mindset lies at the heart of everything I create. Especially when designing the spaces and objects that shape our most personal environment: our homes.*

I am Jan Homann and I design everyday objects, furniture, lighting and (interior) spaces – for either brands and companys or private clients.
Growing up in northern Germany, I studied industrial design at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Kiel. My diploma in 2008 was followed by four years as inhouse designer at Tobias Grau, one of international most renowned and innovative lighting brands. This was particularly characterised by the close work with Tobias and the opportunity to take care of my projects in the field of lighting, furniture, flagship store and exhibition design from the first sketch to the implementation in detail. In 2013 I founded my own studio for design.

Now over 17 years into this wonderful profession, collaborating with various companies and fellow creatives, as well as working closely with a wide range of trades – and more recently with my own hands – has shaped me into the designer I am today.
Beyond my passion for aesthetics and the experience gathered over these years, my work as a designer has always been driven by the desire to create pieces that are as well made as possible. My ever-growing love for nature only further motivates this aspiration to make things that last.*
I would be delighted to share this expertise with you – whether in developing the next, hopefully long-lasting addition to your brand’s portfolio or by accompanying you on the journey to your dream home.  j.

What touches us, matters.
What matters, we want to keep.
What we want to keep, we take care of.

Purpose forms the foundation – emotional connection gives it the chance to last beyond trends. Sustainability has always been a core principle of design – creating emotional value is the most powerful way to support it.
