A bed ( 1... 2... 3... ) 4?
In my opinion, things that endure develop a very particular beauty.
This bed design, originally created for a couple in Hamburg, tells that story in several acts. With one version without bedside tables (2) and another with special features in American walnut (3), No. 4 is not a later iteration but in fact the very first model (1) – built over 10years ago in 2014.
The piece shown here has survived two major moves and several reassemblies, most recently within its current home. But more importantly, it has been used: slept in for over 3,000 nights – roughly 30,000 hours – not counting reading, movie nights or children jumping on it.
And when I returned to photograph it again, the owners joyfull told me: “It’s still as beautiful as in the beginning.” What a joy for me as a designer, as well.
Admittedly: the bedside tables were refinished once after a stain caused by a metal tray, and a few small improvements were introduced in the later versions. But cared for and loved like this, the bed will easily be there for thousands of nights more – and if needed a few more moves, too.

"Is this available in walnut, too?"
– We could make it for you, my carpenter and I.
"… and could we choose the linoleum colour and add a few special features?"
– Yes , of course, would be a pleasure.
This version was created for a couple in the Netherlands as part of the interior of their summer house in Zandvoort, designed by Marjolein Cortvriend. Walnut was the defining material of the overall concept, which meant carefully matching our finish to the built-in elements on site.
The result stays true to the original design while adapting to a new architectural context – proof that a well-considered piece can adapt and evolve without losing its identity.

"This evening I have put the bed together.
First of all a huge compliment for the construction. It was a delight to do.
Everything fits perfectly and is smartly made and designed.
Now everything is together I have seen the bed for the first time.
It is beautiful. I am very happy with the result.
Could you please bring the message over to the carpenters, too!
A great job!" - P.M. (client)

A bed 2
Although the original concept was based on including bedside tables, it quickly became clear that the recessed niches in the headboard would also define the more reduced version without.
Turned out to be a good decision, as the next request for the bed came from a couple who simply did not have enough space for bedside tables.
Which made them even bigger fans of the niches and the even simpler design.
What can I say – sometimes constraints do not diminish a design – they reveal its essence.

A bed 1 ( =4)
Designing a bedroom piece of furniture shortly after founding my own studio was both exciting and meaningful. The bedroom is one of the most personal spaces in a home, and the bed is its central element – far more than just a frame for a mattress. Today it serves many roles: a place to sleep, read, recover, retreat from the outside world.
The design of this first commission by a lovely couple therefore focused on bringing quiet order to a space intended for rest, integrating practical solutions for storing books, personal items and small devices while also addressing the usual cable clutter.
All of this is deliberately understated, allowing the materials to take the lead – oak combined with linoleum in a warm dark anthracite, emphasised by deep shadow lines. Both materials are natural at their core, which felt particularly important in such a sensitive space as the bedroom. They age gracefully, remain pleasant to the touch and contribute to a calm, non-synthetic atmosphere.
A version without bedside tables also emerged during the process, reducing the composition even further to headboard, niche and simple frame alone. The first example was custom-made by my favourite carpenter in 2014, followed by numerous variations – and, as shown above, a long and well-used life.

Design isn't about how it looks
it's about how it makes us feel.
This mindset lies at the heart of everything I create. Especially when designing the spaces and objects that shape our most personal environment: our homes.*
I am Jan Homann and I design everyday objects, furniture, lighting and (interior) spaces – for either brands and companys or private clients.
Growing up in northern Germany, I studied industrial design at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Kiel. My diploma in 2008 was followed by four years as inhouse designer at Tobias Grau, one of international most renowned and innovative lighting brands. This was particularly characterised by the close work with Tobias and the opportunity to take care of my projects in the field of lighting, furniture, flagship store and exhibition design from the first sketch to the implementation in detail. In 2013 I founded my own studio for design.
Now over 17 years into this wonderful profession, collaborating with various companies and fellow creatives, as well as working closely with a wide range of trades – and more recently with my own hands – has shaped me into the designer I am today.
Beyond my passion for aesthetics and the experience gathered over these years, my work as a designer has always been driven by the desire to create pieces that are as well made as possible. My ever-growing love for nature only further motivates this aspiration to make things that last.*
I would be delighted to share this expertise with you – whether in developing the next, hopefully long-lasting addition to your brand’s portfolio or by accompanying you on the journey to your dream home. j.

What touches us, matters.
What matters, we want to keep.
What we want to keep, we take care of.
Purpose forms the foundation – emotional connection gives it the chance to last beyond trends. Sustainability has always been a core principle of design – creating emotional value is the most powerful way to support it.
